May Athlete of the Month: Alicia Asensio!

By Meghan Gehle | May 4, 2017

Sometimes there are athletes in class that just make you stop what you’re doing and gawk in awe, and our May “Athlete of the Month” sits at the top of that list. Upon encountering Alicia Asensio, you get the sense that this woman can do it all: run the fastest 5k, pick up a heavy barbell for endless reps with perfect technique, smoke through a WOD like “Kelly” — five rounds of 400m run, 30 wall balls and 30 box jumps — and not even seem tired, all while raising two sons so energetic that they are now regulars in our CrossFit Kids program, jumping and burpeeing just as enthusiastically as their mom.

We’d call her “Wonder Woman,” but that would be selling her short.

Beyond her superhuman athletic abilities, Alicia is as humble and positive as they come, with a work ethic in the gym that inspires others to push themselves to be better. For these reasons, Alicia was an easy choice this month. Congratulations, Alicia! You inspire us every day!

CS: Tell us a little bit about the difference CrossFit has made in your fitness since you joined. What changes have you noticed?
Alicia: I feel like a new and improved version of myself. When I first started CrossFit, I had 2 kids under the age of 2 and I felt like a stranger in my own body. This was not something that I was used to, given that I had played sports my whole life.  I just didn’t think that I would ever be the same or feel the same again. After my first 9:15 class, I just knew that CrossFit was the thing for me.  Little by little, I felt myself getting stronger and faster.  And here I am 5 years later, able to do things that I never imagined I could do.

CS: What’s your favorite part about coming to CrossFit class?
Alicia: I love that CrossFit is so challenging.  I never feel like I have mastered it, so I am constantly striving towards something. Yet at the same time, CrossFit is accessible to all different kids of people which makes for a great environment. The environment is another reason why I love it.  Being at CrossFit Sausalito feels like being on a team or part of a family. I was on a team for a majority of my life and was missing that camaraderie before I started.
CS: What’s your best piece of advice for a brand new CrossFitter?
Alicia: Don’t be intimidated to start. We all think the workout is hard and we all get sore!
