June Athlete of the Month: Jordan Dodds!

By Meghan Gehle | June 1, 2017
Not only does our June “Athlete of the Month” have a killer clean and jerk, but if there was a gym “Mr. Congeniality” award, he would win that too. Jordan Dodds is equal parts grit and gusto, often posting the fastest time in class as effortlessly as he initiates an enthusiastic post-WOD discussion about pop culture or music. Big strides over the year in skills like double unders and toes-to-bar as well as recent huge PRs in cleans, “Fran,” and Hero WOD “Murph” make his May showing all the more impressive. But the best part of all: always humble, always hard-working, always friendly, Jordan has a talent for making any class he joins immediately high-energy and fun. We are so thankful to have Jordan in the gym and in the community! Congratulations, Jordan!

CS: Tell us a little bit about the difference CrossFit has made in your fitness since you joined. What changes have you noticed? What are your most satisfying accomplishments in the gym so far?
Jordan: Variety and efficiency; those would be the two words to describe the difference CrossFit has made in my life. Before I joined, Jay Behr used to sell it as: “It’s only 4 hours a week, and you’ll never feel better.” I love that I can get in at 6 a.m. (sometimes 9:15 if the stars are aligned), bust out an hour of work, and ride the high through the rest of the day. In addition to that, being able to have personalized coaching on moves I would have never done at a gym by myself is critical to increasing the variety of workouts.

The obvious changes are physical — feeling stronger, faster and increased endurance — but the most pleasant change is mental. My attitude throughout the day is always better on days I do CrossFit versus days I do not. My most satisfying accomplishment is the little bit of weight I am able to hold over my head in an overhead squat. It feels the strangest, but I know each time I work on it, it feels less strange and more natural.

CS: What’s your favorite part about coming to CrossFit class?
Jordan: The people. CrossFit Sausalito could be a documentary because everyone is a character. Never has there been such a welcoming and encouraging group of people, all there supporting each other, getting a little better each day. It’s inspiring.

CS: What’s your best piece of advice for a brand new CrossFitter?
Jordan: Stretch, and go on Saturdays. I need to heed my own advice when it comes to stretching, but all the experienced folks at the box that I look up to all have that in common; they’re all flexible and continue to work on it. And lastly, Saturdays are just fun. You get to meet people outside your normal time zone and there’s a good chance High Lifes might be opened when all is said and done.
