July Athlete of the Month: Rachael Cassidy!

By Meghan Gehle | July 3, 2017

It’s not uncommon for our July “Athlete of the Month” to put her head down, grit through a tough Rx or Hero workout, dazzle the room with her handstand pushups and beautiful lifts, and then dash out the door. But if you took the time to peek around the corner to catch Rachael Cassidy after a workout, you would see what is very often her cashout: a quick swap of her two adorable boys with her fellow powerhouse husband Peter so he too can take his turn getting a workout in. It’s an impressive juggling of fitness and family life that makes Rachael’s steady dominance of the female leaderboard this month all the more amazing. Whether the workout has double unders, overhead squats, running, or pullups, Rachael will attack whatever is planned for the day with everything she’s got and is very quickly emerging as a model of strength, skill and engine at the gym. Together the Cassidys take the phrase “power couple” to a whole new level — we are so thrilled they are a part of the CrossFit Sausalito family!

CS: Tell us a little bit about the difference CrossFit has made in your fitness since you joined CrossFit Sausalito. What are your most satisfying accomplishments in the gym so far?

Rachael: When I arrived in SF, 32 weeks pregnant, knowing nobody but my little family, the first thing I did was look for a CrossFit gym. If I hadn’t stumbled upon CrossFit Sausalito, I would have moved back to Australia by now. There is no doubt, I am faster, stronger and leaner now (with a ways to go – I’m working on it), but the critical difference for me is in my mental fitness. I’ve made a new network of friends. I have a safe place to let off steam (and burn off alcohol) and challenge my own ideas about what I’m capable of. As any working mum at CFS will testify, CrossFit keeps me sane.

CS: What’s your favorite part about coming to CrossFit class?

Rachael: The people. I’ve never been good at working out on my own, but with smart, funny, inspiring people pushing me to work harder and finish faster – I’m addicted.

CS: What’s your best piece of advice for a brand new CrossFitter?
Rachael: Maybe don’t start with a Hero WOD? Ha! Make it a habit and I promise it will change your world.
