January Athlete of the Month: Rick Dodder

By Chris Monroe | January 5, 2018

Our January “Athlete of the Month” could not be more appropriate as he could easily be named our 2017 Athlete of the Year! Rick Dodder started at CrossFit Sausalito three years ago, and since that time has completely transformed himself. While many of us were using the holidays as an excuse to take some time off, Rick was a constant in the noon and Saturday classes, and dominated our end of the year Wendler Cycle. He ended 2017 with an impressive back squat (245#), Bench Press (175#), and a massive deadlift (295#). What is most impressive is Rick’s patience and ability to scale has allowed his hard work, dedication to form, and consistency to propel him forward in all facets of CrossFit. He now has RX pull-ups, toes to bar, and just yesterday got his first double-under (the guys doesn’t quit!)! He is the first to high five his fellow athlete and always leaves class with a huge smile on his face. Congratulations, Rick!

Tell us a little bit about the difference CrossFit has made in your fitness since you joined CrossFit Sausalito. What are your most satisfying accomplishments in the gym so far?

I’ve added 10 pounds or more of upper body muscle mass since starting CrossFit almost three years ago.   My core strength and strength in my shoulders has been steadily increasing with heavier deadlifts, back squats and shoulder presses.  Downside is half my shirts went to Goodwill.

My initial big accomplishment was singles with the jump rope.  It took weeks of practice before it just clicked.  Within the last six months or so my shoulder mobility has improved to where my front squats, cleans and overhead squats are much better.  Finally being able to do a 65-lb OHS was very satisfying.

What’s your favorite part about coming to CrossFit class?

The camaraderie at CrossFit Sausalito is my favorite part.  Hearing about and seeing the accomplishments of the other athletes makes me feel good and inspires me to work harder.

What’s your best piece of advice for a brand new CrossFitter?

Many of the movements we do require strength, mobility and skills, and that can be frustrating for a new CrossFitter.   My advice is to work with the coaches to scale these movements to find a comfortable starting point emphasizing your form over speed and weight.
