February Athlete of the Month: Jack Mullin!

By Meghan Gehle | February 2, 2017

Feats of human awesomeness run pretty frequent at CrossFit Sausalito in January, but our latest “Athlete of the Month” went so far and beyond your run-of-the-mill New Year’s fitness resolution and instead set himself on a lifelong path to better health and fitness. Jack Mullin early on decided he wanted to go the distance; by focusing on technique and proper scaling and intensity each time he came into the gym, Jack was able to work out a whopping 27 times in 30 days! Always showing up with a go-getter attitude and heartfelt enthusiasm and support for his fellow athletes, Jack proves time and time again that consistency wins over everything. This month, Jack has achieved double unders, toes-to-bar, and Rx weights on multiple workouts, all by staying the course, practicing his weaknesses, and keeping a positive attitude. We can’t wait to see him crush the CrossFit Open and so much more this year! Congratulations, Jack! We are so incredibly inspired by you!

CS: Tell us a little bit about the difference CrossFit has made in your fitness. What changes have you noticed? What are your most satisfying accomplishments in the gym so far?

Jack: By going to CrossFit, I find that I feel more energized and also a little sore — but that makes me feel alive.  I sleep better, and overall, I feel healthier. It is a lifestyle change, and you need to stick with it. Consistency is key; so is setting PR’s (Personal Records) and then beating them. You have to tackle your GOAT head on, and constantly improve.

CS: What’s your favorite part about coming to CrossFit class?

Jack: My favorite part about CrossFit is the people and the camaraderie, and pushing yourself to do more than you thought you could.  The camaraderie is helping me make better eating decisions. Even the small changes help: simple things like dropping the cream and sugar from your coffee and drinking it black instead. The little diet changes add up, and overall, I am eating healthier now.

CS: What’s your best piece of advice for a brand new CrossFitter?

Jack: My advice would be to really listen to the coaches. We have great coaches, so listen to them. Master the form and skills before you go HEAVY. Once you have mastered the skills, keep on practicing. Listen to your body, hydrate it, fuel it properly. Personally, I find that joint supplements, like fish oil, seem to help me.  Getting at least eight hours of sleep each night really helps as well. The biggest thing you can do is to just show up for class, even if you do not feel like it. Just show up and do mobility, or even go super light on the WOD. Just show up!
