December Athlete of the Month: Samantha Fazio!

By Meghan Gehle | December 2, 2016

When we first met our December “Athlete of the Month” just over a year ago, we knew right away we were dealing with a force of nature. If you know Samantha Fazio, you know she has an unmistakable glint in her eye that tells you if she wants to accomplish something, she will get it done. Whether it’s juggling her workout amidst her busy work and family schedule as a mother of two boys, completing a long and brutal workout “Rx” no matter how long it takes, or deadlifting 225 pounds off the floor because she believes in her ability to do so without question, Sam will deliver, come hell or highwater. And though this determination is one of a million things we love about her, what we love further still is the constant, encouraging, supportive influence she has on the people around her. Sam makes every person she goes to class with believe that they can do anything too, and for that she deserves all the recognition we can give her! Congratulations, Sam! You’re an inspiration!

CS: Tell us a little bit about the difference CrossFit has made in your fitness since you joined. What changes have you noticed?
Sam: When I think about CrossFit, I can easily say it has changed me in every way. Although I have always had a love for fitness and weightlifting in general, I have never found such a full range of both strength and endurance all packaged up in a pretty little “box.” Not only has my strength continued to grow, but I am challenged everyday by the ever-changing expectations I have for myself. Even when I think I can’t go further, I look around the room and find strength in every person there around me. This pushes me to give my best even when it seems impossible to do more. In the end this is what I am able to look back at and see how far I have come, and really, how far I can go.

CS: What’s your favorite part about coming to CrossFit class?

Sam: This is an easy one for me. I LOVE the team aspect of such an individual workout. When I first came to CrossFit Sausalito, I truly had no intention of making new friends. I may have even rolled my eyes a bit at Meghan when she said her closest friends were those she met at CFS. I now understand the weight of her words. The relationships that I have built here are some of the strongest I have been so lucky to have. Not only do I build my physical strength every day, but I continue to build incredible bonds, and through that I am able to go beyond what I think I am capable of doing in any WOD.

CS: What’s your best piece of advice for a brand new CrossFitter?
Sam: I am sure you have heard it before but here I go: Show up. Keep showing up. When it hurts, show up (by the way, it will always hurt!). When you are tired, show up. When you think you can’t, show up. When you drank too much wine the night before, hee hee, show up! Sounds so simple, but really it is the hardest part. When we show up we do incredible things. I am constantly in awe of all of my fellow CFS crew and how we always SHOW UP! It will always be tough if you are doing it right, but you will never look back and say “I wish I didn’t show up.”
If I have not yet met you, I look forward to the day. I am certain you too will inspire me to do something amazing!
